The song that captured my attention the most out of this set was probably Ozzy, by Tales of Terror. ToT was a punk rock band from Sacramento in the early 1980’s.

Ozzy was also covered by the band Green River, also included in this set, which featured Mark Arm of Mudhoney, and Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam. Legend has it that Kurt Cobain was also a big fan.

I really didn’t know anything about ToT until I put this set together, and now I’m fixated on them. They have that underground-California-in-the-80’s sound to them. It’s hard to describe. I’m picturing a bunch of kids who gravitated to skateboarding, LSD, eyeliner and punk rock, without totally giving themselves to any of those things. Like a mishmash of disparate elements that somehow fuse together to form a coherent whole.

That’s metaphor for California in general, in my mind.

You can read more about Tales of Terror here.
